Senior Research Associate

Haider Ali

Dr Haider Ali’s research focuses on climate extremes, hydrology, and tropical cyclone rainfall dynamics, with particular emphasis on understanding how climate change is altering extreme rainfall and flood-generating weather systems. His work combines climate modelling, hydrological analysis, satellite observations, and statistical methods to investigate the physical drivers of hydroclimatic extremes across regional and global scales.

He has worked on topics including tropical cyclone rainfall structure and asymmetry, temperature scaling of short-duration rainfall extremes, monsoon variability, and compound processes influencing extreme precipitation and flooding. His research integrates high-resolution climate simulations, reanalysis datasets, and hydrological modelling to better understand future changes in extreme weather and associated uncertainties.

More broadly, his work aims to support climate resilience and disaster risk reduction by improving understanding of how hydroclimatic hazards may evolve in a warming climate.

Focus on DARe

Within the DARe Hub, Haider contributes to climate-focused research activities, including the development of scientific outputs, climate storylines, and threshold-based analyses related to extreme events and climate risk. His role involves supporting the integration of climate science into broader project objectives through data analysis, interpretation of climate projections, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Drawing on his background in civil engineering and experience working across climate and hydrology projects, he also contributes to stakeholder-oriented materials, dataset development, and relevant hydrological modelling activities where needed.
