Roberto Palacin

Co-Director, Co-Investigator

A member of Newcastle University's Future Mobility Research Group at the School of Engineering, Professor Roberto Palacin has a background in Mechanical Engineering, Design and Railway Systems Engineering.

Roberto has been involved in research projects on subjects such as strategic development of transport systems, energy efficiency of urban and mainline rail systems, urban mobility and sustainability, development of innovative railway concepts, energy optimisation of transport systems, intermodality of the European rail network and development of modular concepts for high-speed.

Roberto’s research interests revolve around two main aspects, namely, application of a systems approach to decarbonisation of transport and human-systems interaction which includes mobility and mass-capacity in the context of MaaS (urban and long distance), improving railways energy efficiency, connectivity and the development of ergonomic and design-led transport environments.

Focus on DARe

Roberto is one of the three Directors of DARe, contributing to its governance, including chairing the Flexible Fund Governance Committee, as well as DARe’s intellectual direction. His research focus as part of the Hub’s activities will be on aspects related to systems thinking, behavioural analysis, electrification, urban and mainline railways and their collective wider impacts, including policy.
