Driving home for Christmas: insights on the transition to electric vehicles

Every December, millions of us pack up the car and make long Christmas journeys across the country. Each year, this migration provides a unique lens on a bigger picture, the UK’s shift to electric vehicles. 

From winter impacts on battery performance to the challenge of charging away from home, the Christmas period shines a spotlight on what is working and what still needs attention if the EV transition is to succeed.

Stress testing the charging network 

Christmas travel is one of the few times the country moves at scale outside everyday commuting patterns. And as EV adoption accelerates, more drivers are navigating long winter journeys that test the network’s resilience: 

  • Higher demand for rapid and ultra-rapid chargers 
  • Weather-related reductions in battery efficiency 
  • Busy strategic sites with limited redundancy 
  • Gaps in rural coverage on trunk and coastal routes 

This is more than an inconvenience; it is a real-world load test of the kind of pressures the network will routinely face as EV uptake rises. These seasonal peaks highlight where further infrastructure and investment must accelerate.

No one should be stranded at Christmas 

The Christmas season sharpens our sense of fairness and inclusion and exposes the inequities in the EV transition.

Many people travel to visit relatives, and for EV drivers this may mean no destination charging. Whether staying with family in rural locations, older properties without driveways, or communities with minimal public provision, drivers can find themselves unable to charge overnight, planning detours to unfamiliar areas or relying on distant chargers during peak demand.

For households without off-street parking, these barriers are not just seasonal – they are normal.

Ensuring that public charging is reliable, safe and geographically equitable is essential, both for daily commuting and the moments that matter most.

Christmas freight increases this pressure

The weeks before Christmas also see a dramatic spike in HGV and van movements, as deliveries surge to stock shops, fulfil online orders, and keep supply chains moving.

This intensified freight activity adds further strain to winter transport networks. Electric HGVs require significantly higher charging power, and depot-based charging isn’t always available in dense urban or constrained industrial areas.

Cold weather reduces range for vans completing tight delivery windows, and long-haul freight needs reliable ultra-rapid charging on strategic corridors.

The festive season exposes the same foundational issue across cars, vans and HGVs: long-distance winter reliability. Decarbonising freight will require coordinated investment in megawatt-scale charging, logistics-focused infrastructure planning, and close collaboration between freight operators, local authorities and DSOs.

From reactive to proactive

Christmas travel reminds us that successful electrification demands forward planning and systems-level thinking:

  • Design for peak winter demand, not average conditions
  • Integrate energy and transport decision-making
  • Improve data sharing and forecasting
  • Prioritise underserved communities
  • View EV infrastructure as a connected system, not as standalone chargers
