Led by Prof. Simon Blainey (University of Birmingham) and Adrian Hickford (University of Southampton), the project explored how resilience practices from sectors such as energy, water, and communications can be adapted to strengthen transport infrastructure and improve decision-making.
The research highlights that resilience is a system-wide property, requiring strategies that go beyond asset-level interventions to embrace network adaptability, digital capability, and inclusive planning. Key recommendations include adopting predictive maintenance, modular upgrades, and digital twins to improve recovery and long-term performance. The findings also stress the importance of governance, equity, and cross-sector collaboration in embedding resilience within transport planning.
In October 2025, the project team delivered an online presentation to DARe members and stakeholders, sharing insights and practical pathways for integrating resilience into transport systems.
