DARe workshop explores criticality and vulnerability in Cambridgeshire

Ongoing economic and housing development pressures, combined with increasingly frequent and severe weather events, place growing strain on transport systems. These interacting pressures contribute to congestion, asset deterioration, and service disruption, influencing travel behaviour and network performance across a wide range of stakeholders. The DARe Cambridgeshire Case Study focuses on the growing corridor from St Neots to Cambridge and surrounding key locations to capture the interactions between land use, climate change, and transport.

In December, DARe hosted a workshop that brought together a diverse group of Cambridgeshire-based stakeholders to share their insights and collaboratively identify and map the most critical and vulnerable transport network routes and points. The session recognised that stakeholders hold different priorities, roles, and functions within the transport system, and sought to capture these varied perspectives to build a more comprehensive understanding of critical points, and support more informed planning.

Participants included representatives from Cambridgeshire County Council, Department for Transport, Greater Cambridge Partnership, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, National Highways, Voi, and Welch Group.

The workshop centred on four interactive sessions: (1) identifying key elements of the network and their level of importance, (2) mapping associated climate, ageing, and capacity related vulnerabilities, (3) capturing wider social, economic, and environmental impacts across the transport network, and (4) understanding system interdependencies through DfT-inspired personas. These sessions were complemented by a key presentation on the ongoing work to stress-test the region’s transport network.

This collaborative workshop helped develop the DARe Cambridgeshire Case Study. By capturing stakeholder priorities, the DARe team can develop scenarios that reflect how the regional transport system operates today and could be affected in the future by ongoing development, ageing infrastructure, and changing climate conditions.

The Cambridgeshire Case Study aims to help support decision making by identifying transformation pathways towards an adaptable, resilient, and decarbonised transport system, delivering value for local communities, the wider transport sector, and policymakers alike.
