EPSRC Transport Decarbonisation Large Grant Networking Event
The DARe Hub was privileged to join the EPSRC Transport Decarbonisation Large Grant Networking Meeting, hosted September 2024 at the University of Leeds.
The agenda was packed with insightful discussions about the future of transport, and how different research initiatives can work together to meet the UK’s ambitious climate goals. A central theme of the day was the need for cross-sector collaboration and data sharing to speed up innovation and impact. For the DARe Hub, this meeting was a chance to present some of our research work in decarbonising various transport modes, including freight and vehicles, and to highlight our focus on how to reduce carbon emissions across road and rail systems.Â
During the session on joint working and opportunities for synergy, the group discussed shared tasks and coordination activities across transport sectors, with a clear emphasis on how each project could contribute to a low-carbon future. This opened up exciting conversations about how DARe’s expertise in multi-modal transport decarbonisation could align with other research on low-carbon concrete and emissions reduction technologies across freight networks. For example, we are exploring the carbon impact of freight and vehicles, and how electrification can drastically reduce emissions.Â
Many interesting insights emerged from the discussions, shedding light on key challenges and opportunities in the transport decarbonisation landscape. One key takeaway for the DARe team was that cross-project data sharing and cross-sector learning will be critical to achieving systemic decarbonisation in the future. Through frequent joint workshops and working group discussions, representatives from different projects and teams will be able to effectively exchange experiences and uncover innovative ideas across different fields. This collaboration not only helps deepen and broaden the scope of research but also accelerates the translation of research findings into policy recommendations and practical applications. Â
By maintaining close collaboration with other EPSRC-funded Hubs and our Project Partners, DARe is helping explore pathways to a resilient, low-carbon transport system that can meet the challenges of the future.Â
