The fellowships will focus on strengthening knowledge exchange between academia and the transport sector, while supporting the routes for impact of DARe’s Transport Performance & Risk Analysis Framework (TPRAF) within selected partner organisations. Starting in September, fellows will work on applied projects, collaborating closely with DARe researchers and stakeholders to further develop pathways for integrating DARe’s outputs into decision-making and operational practice. Collectively, the fellowships will address challenges from road and rail resilience for long-term transport planning, green infrastructure, critical asset management, to digital tool integration, showcasing the breadth of applications that TPRAF can support to help inform decision-making.
The call attracted much interest from researchers across the UK, demonstrating the breadth of expertise within the UK’s research community. The DARe Hub extends its thanks to everyone who applied.

Successful DARe Impact Fellows
- Dr Huili Chen (Loughborough University) – Theme A: Assessing the vulnerabilities within road networks based upon ongoing work to identify thresholds for asset failure and climate hazards.
- Dr Andrew Nichols (The University of Sheffield) – Theme B: Developing adaptation pathways for major rail infrastructure, supporting long‑term decision‑making under climate uncertainty.
- Dr Syed Attique Shah (Birmingham City University) – Theme D: Managing the performance and interdependencies of critical transport assets, focusing on how assets affect system reliability and planning.
- Dr Jinghua Jiang (Loughborough University) – Theme E: Planning green infrastructure interventions to mitigate transport system risks associated with extreme weather.
- Prof Qiuchen Lu (University College London) – Theme F: Exploring integration opportunities with existing analytics tools and platforms to enable enhanced assessment of climate risks, carbon accounting and/or electrification infrastructure planning.
